Enjoy Oktoberfest

We know it is not quite September yet, but it’s never too early to start planning a great destination weekend for Oktoberfest. Most of us are not going to make it over to Germany to celebrate the harvest and drink beer, so here are a few options that are closer to home for you to try out this year.

Divine Barrel Brewing – NoDa – September 10th from noon-9 pm – food trucks, games, eating contests, costume contests and much more. Free to enter and join events, food and drinks are not free, but are delicious.
Lore Brewing Company – Indian Land – September 10th from 6 pm – beer and food including a new beer release. $20 for a commemorative stein filled with beer, then discounted refills all evening.
Lost Worlds Brewing – Cornelius – September 10 and October 15 – food, drinks, music, and a commemorative stein. Free entry, pay for eats and drinks.
Model A Brewing Co. – Fort Mill – October 1st starting at noon with music until 6pm – food, drinks, Polka band, Kona Ice for the kids, limited edition beers, and merchandise.
Olde Mecklenburg Brewery – York Road – September 16-18 and 23-25 – the largest Oktoberfest in the area, free entry to German music, German food, and drinks.
Old Town Oktoberfest – Rock Hill – October 15th from noon – 9 pm – German beer, ax throwing, cornhole tournament, food trucks, balloon artist, face painting. Free entry.

Farmer’s Market Returning to Belmont

Fresh locally grown produce, honey, and local meat are about to be available once again at the farmer’s market in Belmont. This great event is perfect for connecting with the community, being entertained, and getting yummy treats to last the whole week.

The farmers market is located on Glenway Street next to the railroad tracks. Opening date should be Thursday September 22nd from 3:30 – 7 pm. Of course, with any outdoor event, weather can cancel the event.

There has not been a farmers market in Belmont for more than five years. Many local farmers are already busy on the weekends with markets in surrounding towns. This makes a Thursday market good for farmers, and is hopefully great for buyers as they come home from work and can grab fresh foods to last them through the weekend.

At this time, there will only be food vendors at the market, but there could be an arts and crafts component in the future. Live music and entertainment could also follow as is typical at a lot of farmers markets. Tote bags will be available for purchase if you forget your reusable bag at home.

The farmers market will run through the fall, then return in the spring when farmers have produce available again. Tentative dates through the fall are September 22, October 20, and November 17. This last date is just in time to stock up before Thanksgiving.

Drift Restaurant Lake Wylie Opening Next Week

The long wait is almost over. The day after Mother’s Day is the official opening of Drift restaurant on the waterfront of Lake Wylie. Drift will bring steak, seafood, and pasta to a great large space with a dining room, two patios, and drive-up boat access.

We first told you about Drift in February of this year in this post. We detailed the two story space that will have a modern farmhouse style featuring craft beer and a selection of over 1,000 bottles of wine. The upstairs will be an event space available to reserve for private parties and corporate events.

Drift is brought to you by the owners of Pump House in Rock Hill and Napa at Kingsley in Fort Mill. This dinner with a view will be great for local residents, but will also be a draw for anyone in the Charlotte area with only a 30 minute drive to be back Uptown.

Drift will seat 280 people and has an indoor/outdoor dining experience due to glass walls that can be moved out of the way to take advantage of east-facing waterfront views. In inclement weather, you can watch a storm roll in through the glass wall, but be snug inside.

Drift is located in the McLean development close to Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. For directions, the address is 315 Lanyard Lane, Belmont, NC 28012. Initial hours will be M-Th 4pm-10pm, Fri-Sat 4pm-11pm, and 3pm-9pm on Sunday. As the restaurant is more established they may begin brunch on the weekends and start lunch service during the week.

Where to Find the Best Holiday Lights and Markets around Lake Wylie

You probably want to make up for lost time, and we have a few great ideas for the best holiday lights and markets to help you start celebrating early. Here are a few of our favorite places for holiday lights:

Carowinds Winterfest – Fort Mill, SC, lights, parade, treats, and activities all for $24.99 per person.
Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Speedway Christmas – Concord, NC, 3.75 mile drive through event, $30-40 per car with a fast pass option for $70/car.
Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens Holidays at the Garden – Belmont, NC, outdoor event with food trucks, beverages, and marshmallow roasting. $14.95 per adult, savings for seniors, and kids, children under 2 are free.
Festival of Trees in Belmont – Belmont, NC, a free event in historic downtown Belmont.
McAdenville’s Christmas Town USA, McAdenville, NC. This free event is perfect for driving through, or walking.

Where to Watch Fireworks

Independence Day is coming soon so it’s the perfect time to decide where you will watch fireworks. With a rumored shortage of fireworks, large displays may be all you can find this year so you want to get the best bang for your buck. Here are some of the best in the area, and pardon us for being biased, but the fireworks on Lake Wylie are probably the best.

Lake Wylie – grab a view of the water from near or on the Buster Boyd Bridge for the best views. Bonus, get there early and get a table at Papa Doc’s or Rey Azetca or other neighborhood spots with decks or patios. Extra bonus, on a boat in the water. The fireworks will start around 9:30 and are launched from Camp Thunderbird. This event is free, but donations are accepted.
Carowinds – July 3 & 4, catch fireworks and patriotic music at Carowinds as part of daily admission. Reservations are required online for entry and most days are sold out with limited tickets each day due to Covid protocols. Daily passes start at $42. Fireworks start at 8:45pm.
US National Whitewater Center – July 3 & 4th. This event features yoga, fireworks, live music and activities. Cost is $6 for parking then free. Event runs 9am to 9:30pm with fireworks closing out each night.
Red, White & Boom – July 3rd – This annual event in Rock Hill, SC is great for families with young children. There are inflatables, food trucks, and music provided by Groove Machine and Kids in America. Event runs 4pm – 10pm with fireworks starting at 9:30pm.
Gastonia’s Fourth of July Festival – 4 pm until 9:30 pm enjoy food trucks, live music, vendors, and of course fireworks. For the adults, there is also a beer garden.

New Casino Opening in Kings Mountain

Early in July, a new casino will open in a temporary location in Kings Mountain. The casino, called Two Kings Casino Resort, has long been awaited and is part of the Catawba Indian Nation. It is a great day trip from Lake Wylie and is perfect for those days when you are recovering from a sunburn, or on rainy days.

The temporary facility is located off exit 5 on Interstate 85 near the Kings Mountain Boulevard interchange. It is a 29,000 square foot complex with 500 slot machines that will bring in revenue for Cleveland County, the town of Kings Mountain, and the Catawba Tribe in North and South Carolina. The permanent facility will have an additional 1,300 slot machines, games tables, and sports betting. The casino will eventually employ thousands of people, but for now they are hiring hundreds of people to staff the temporary location.

Food and drinks will be available from an onsite bar in addition to an outdoor patio with food trucks. Eventually there will be restaurants and additional bars with enough seating capacity for 940 people.

The final location is currently being developed and is expected to be complete in 2022. Until then, expect the casino to be crowded right after launch as everyone rushes to check it out. It will be open 24/7 so you can come late in the evening or early in the morning to see it when it is not so crowded.

Carowinds is Open for Summer!

It’s that time of year again, Carowinds has opened for summer! It’s a great getaway for young and old alike with thrill rides, adventure, waterpark, and much more. The 2021 summer season is underway with the waterpark opening this weekend to join the rest of the park.

There are a few differences this year, with reservations for entry to keep park visitors numbers reduced. Reservations are required for season ticket holders as well as day pass visitors. Visit the Carowinds website https://www.carowinds.com/ to make reservations. Slots are filling up quickly, especially reservations for the main park and waterpark. Be sure to get yours today.

Masks will still be required for guests that have not been vaccinated for Covid-19, but temperature checks are no longer necessary. With vaccination rates on the rise, that means that you should see many maskless faces making the park feel almost like normal again.

If you do go to the waterpark, be sure to check out the new Boogie Board Racer, the longest mat racing slide in the Southeast. It joins the almost 60 other rides, the rest of the waterpark, and the live entertainment to keep you having fun all summer long.

For out of town guests, there is an onsite hotel and campground so there are accommodations for every budget.

There is something for everyone at the park, just don’t forget to bring your sunscreen, or do since they sell sunscreen at shops throughout the park.

Ebenezer Park to Reopen Soon

One of the gems of Lake Wylie is about to reopen after extensive renovations. Ebenezer Park is located on the southern shores of Lake Wylie and has 12,400 acres of land in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The park has many different features, but of course, water based activities are the highlight of the park.

The park has extensive facilities for camping, boating, kayaking, canoeing, playground, volleyball, basketball, fishing, and swimming. Picnic shelters, swings, and benches are all along the waterfront. There are great views of the main channel of the lake perfect for sunrises and sunsets. There are 67 fully equipped campsites with water, sewer and electric hook-ups. Wi-Fi coverage available through most of the park.

Updates to the park include a 10,000 square foot pier with covered shelters, an enlarged and dredged swimming/beach area, and additional boat slips for loading and unloading or watercraft. A multipurpose building was built to accommodate concerts, movies in the park, and special occasion rentals. A new boardwalk was constructed at the Ranger Station with park benches and new trails were built through the woods. Basketball and sand volleyball courts were added, and the parking lot was redesigned with angled spaces for watercraft trailers. An arbor entrance was constructed with beach chairs. All in all, $4.6 million of renovations are almost complete.

The reopening celebration is scheduled for Saturday, May 1st, 2021 from 11 am until 1 pm. Activities will include a ribbon cutting, live entertainment, music, and more. The park is located at 4490 Boatshore Road, Rock Hill, SC for map directions.
