The interactive light show on the Rail Trail is here for just a few more days and it is worth checking out. Titled “I Heart Rail Trail: Lights”, this outdoor show along the rail trail is an interactive light installation that is here until March 7th. This means you have a few more days to check it out before it’s gone.

There are 6 different exhibits along the rail trail spanning from Carson Boulevard to Atherton Mill in SouthEnd. The installations are the work of many local artists in partnership with the Charlotte Rail Trail, Charlotte Center City Partners, and U.S. Bank. It is part of the I Heart Rail Trail initiative which should bring many projects to share with the community.

Below is a brief description and location of the six installations:

1. Fairy Ring – Atherton Plaza, 2102 South Boulevard – 80 hand-sculpted mushrooms – Artist Meredity Connelly
2. Seating ReArrangements – Dilworth Artisan Station Plaza, 118 E. Kingston Ave – ten motion illuminated chairs, socially distanced – Artist Ellie Richards
3. Lover’s Lighthouse – 1616 Camden Road, above Leroy Fox – illuminated lightbox with slowly changing LED lights – Artist Sharon Dowell
4. COVID Confessionals – Dimensional Fund Advisors Plaza, 1616 S. Tryon St. – Covid-19 themed structure with socially distanced walls – Artist Rachel Dickey
5. Threads – Charlotte Urban Design Center, 1507 Camden Road – stainless steel spools from a textile mill – Artist Kit Kube
6. Light Beans – 1100 South Plaza, at the apartment splash pad – acrylic semi-circles reminiscent of angler fish – Artist Luvly Moon

As part of the experience, guests may hear music, see performers, and more surprises. Interaction with the art is encouraged, but social distancing, masks, and hand-washing are required. More events are planned throughout the year as well.

Restaurant Week or The Queen’s Feast has officially been cancelled for this month. This event usually takes place towards the end of July, but as Covid-19 has forced restaurants to 50% capacity, the event just would not be the same. Organizers are working now to find a new date for the event and are hoping for later in the summer.

This is another example of this virus changing things for everyone. Going to restaurants is typically a time when we can gather with friends and family to celebrate, connect, and catch up. This is also typically a time for people to explore new restaurants to get a special price-fixe menu to sample signature dishes.

Event organizers say it doesn’t make sense for restaurants to hold the event until dine in can be over 50%. The event has been held each July for the past 12 years, and has always been about the dining experience. Organizers estimate that each day of the event brings in about $1 million to participating restaurants.

Depending on how things go with this virus, there is a chance that the event could be cancelled until next year. This could be an opportunity for restaurants to find alternative ways to celebrate their cuisine. With many restaurants still open for take out service and many more developing take out when they were strictly dine-in, innovation is thriving right now. There could be a take away version of restaurant week so we can still celebrate the cuisine of each of these amazing restaurants. We will definitely keep an eye out for more developments because all of us need a break from cooking for ourselves sometimes.
