Duke Energy has invited many residents from the Concord Road area to an open house on June 7 to discuss the upcoming plans to sell nearly 300 acres of Lake Wylie land. Currently the land is zoned as medium density residential but it was not specified what type of land use is planned. These plans have only further encouraged many resident’s desires to rein in the increased residential development around the lake.
Residents are concerned about companies like Duke Energy trying to build as many homes as possible regardless of quality or environmental impact. Allison Love, who serves on the York County Council has said she is concerned about the high density of development, especially on 274, a busy interstate. Other concerns include building density, affect of homes on waterways, and how it would affect amenities such as parks.
Duke Energy owns 88 properties in the York County area. Crescent Communities, which started as a branch of Duke Power, owns another 90 properties totaling 950 acres of land. They have already developed quite a few single family neighborhoods in the area with plans to develop more in the future. They currently have 10 properties for sale that have zoning for hundreds of new homes.
