The plan for the aquatic center covers 34,000 square feet of space. Included in the plan is a 50-meter pool, a warm water programming pool with zero degree entry for classes, therapy, and aquatic safety instruction. There will be spectator seating for over 1,200 people, clinical rooms, a weight room, and a hospitality suite.

The mission of Gaston Aquatics is to improve the health of the region by providing swimming instruction for all children and adults of all socio-economic levels. Death by drowning is totally preventable with correct training. In addition, they want to offer adaptive aquatics for differently-abled people, provide pool space for medially-focused rehabilitation, and provide programming for veterans as well. Rescue training will be available to train new lifeguards. In addition, there will be competitive swim teams and individual competition swimming for regional and national competitions. The aquatic center is intending to be a place of great determination, and hopefully victories great and small.

The new section runs from President James K. Polk State Historic site at 12031 Lancaster Highway in Pineville all the way to Gilroy Drive in Lancaster County, South Carolina. This specific section of trails also connects to the Cross Charlotte Trail or XCLT. The XCLT will eventually connect across the northern part of Mecklenburg County. This gives trail users a safe way to traverse all throughout the area without the worry of traffic and is also much more scenic than the roads and highways.

The project cost $8 million and included 2.5 miles of stream restoration, two pedestrian bridge crossings, five neighborhood connectors, three boardwalk systems, and two smaller bridge crossings. There are elevation changes closer to the South Carolina state line making this section of trails more challenging. There are public access points for the trails at the James K. Polk Historic Site, Pineville Lake Park/Belle Johnston Center at 330 Lake Drive, and at 12021 Lancaster Highway. Public parking spots are available at Gilroy Drive trailhead in South Carolina, and just North of the new section at 9800 Leitner Drive in Pineville.

As of the time this was written, there are currently 67 miles of greenway with another 11 miles under construction. 13 additional miles of trails are in the design phase. There are seven projects underway that should start construction in the next year creating 15 miles of additional trails. This is great for reducing cyclists on the roads and provides a safe and beautiful way to stay healthy.

Now that the plat review has been accepted, by a vote of 8 to 1, the next step of the project is to get the civil construction plan done. This will include a wetlands plan.  After that, utilities, roads, and sidewalks will be constructed. Once those are in place, homes will start to be erected.

The current plan calls for 34 homes on 46 acres. There are some easements for Duke Power that will take up 19 acres of the project. This means that 19 acres will not be developed so will be green space. The remaining 26.5 acres will have the homes and two new roads leading to a cul-de-sac. The community will share open space on the cove with direct access to the Lake, though not with a boat ramp. Residents will need to use public boat ramps or marina storage for watercraft. Lots should be around a half acre each. Home plans have not been drawn up yet, but could be large as the lots will accommodate larger homes.

Manors at Handsmill is located in the award winning Clover school district. This means lower South Carolina taxes, but stellar schools. To reach the neighborhood, head south on Hands Mill Highway from Highway 49, then turn left on Pinnacle Way. This great location is close to shopping, dining, and is an easy commute if you need to get into Uptown Charlotte.

Homes were built by True Homes between 2019 and 2022. They have one or two stories with between 3 and 6 bedrooms, 2 to 5.5 bathrooms and 2,157 to 3,614 square feet. In addition to the school year starting earlier, there will be days that students head home for early release. These days are so teachers can have additional planning time. These early release dates are all on Fridays, September 1st, November 17th in 2023, and February 9th and April 26th in 2024.

In addition to the current breaks for Thanksgiving and winter holidays, there will be two “inter-session” breaks. These “inter-session” breaks will each be for a week, one October 9-13 and one February 19-23. The end date for the school calendar and graduation will be May 30, 2024.

State law enacted in 2006 states that the school year for public schools in South Carolina can’t begin before the third Monday in August. The only way around that law is if a school operates on a year-round modified calendar. Clover School District had a lot of community conversations before making this change. They sent out surveys and found that most of the respondents agreed with the change.

There will be some concerns that will have to be dealt with before the change occurs. Many parents were concerned about sports schedules, and most importantly, childcare during breaks and early release days. The school system is already planning to provide childcare for the early release days so one worry is already taken care of. District leaders are working on the other concerns and plan to release more information in January.

Festive trees will be decorated with holiday lights with the official lighting at 6:30 pm. A special display of “Oh Starry Night” in luminaries will be presented by Strong Like AK on the upper field of Stowe Park.

The event is located at 24 S. Main Street in the heart of Belmont. If you can’t get to the official lighting ceremony, never fear. The trees have decorations as well as lights so they can be enjoyed day or night throughout the month of December with an end date of January 3rd.

Luminaries can be purchased to light the “Oh Starry Night: Lighting a Path to Hope”. They are a fundraiser to help support pediatric cancer patient financial care and housing support. This is through the Strong Like AK foundation. They can be donated at this link for $20 each. This worthy cause helps ease the financial burden of some of the 1.7 million people diagnosed each year with cancer. You can dedicate your luminary to someone currently fighting cancer or in memory of someone lost to cancer. You can share the story of the person you are honoring and it will be on display for the entire month of December.

Catawba Riverkeeper announced on their website that “Out of concern for the well-being and safety of our volunteers, site captains, and staff around the uncertainty of the weather impacts of Hurricane Ian across the entire region, we have decided to CANCEL The Catawba Riversweep on October 1st, 2022.”

The Catawba Riversweep event brings together many different organizations, partners, and volunteers for community-wide stewardship. Many of these efforts will still happen, though in smaller ways. There are still many other ways you can also help to keep Lake Wylie and the surrounding waterways litter-free. There are additional monthly events listed on the Catawba Riverkeepers website, one as early as October 22nd. In addition, you can host your own cleanup. Catawba Riverkeeper will provide supplies if you can supply the people-power. Volunteers will also receive Riversweep t-shirts.

This annual Catawba Riversweep event will return on October 7, 2023. Anyone who has a vested interest in the Catawba-Wateree River Basin should come and help out so be sure to save the date.

The park will be open for limited hours for the event with rides and attractions in the dark for some extra spooky adventure. The scary event is not recommended for patrons under 13 years old. The park is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through the end of October, but be sure you have the correct ticket, the park is open during the day, but you need separate admission for the Scarowinds event after dark. Season pass holders can get some extra perks as they can bring in guests for a discounted admission price.

On opening night, real world scares got in the way of the imaginary ones at the park. Unfounded rumors of shots being fired at the park quickly led to the park closing early. This prank is the cause of some new rules at the event including a brand new chaperone policy. Be ready to bring your ID and know that anyone under 18 has to be with an adult that is at least 21 years old. One chaperone can only be responsible for up to 4 other people so plan your group accordingly.

In addition, there is a no bag policy. You cannot bring in a bag or purse or backpack. If you have a medical necessity, you are allowed to bring in that medically necessary equipment in a small bag which is subject to a search. 106 North Main Street in Belmont is the new home of Stone Fired Social, a pizza place taking the spot where Johnny B’s Pizza used to be (it closed in 2021). It is right next to sister restaurant The String Bean.

The menu is still being refined, but we know for sure that the pies will offer a selection of toppings, and customization options. There will be appetizers, wings, salads, sandwiches, pizzas with red sauce, pizzas with alternative sauces, and a kids menu. There will also be more interesting offerings with fun names like the Hulk Smash Pistachio and the Red Corvette Red. All pizzas will be available in 12 inch, 16 inch, or grandma style. The grandma style is a rectangular Sicilian style.

The restaurant, once open, will be available for lunch and dinner six days per week. They will be closed on Mondays. Patrons can eat, play arcade games, order 12 different flavors of gelato, or make use of the full bar.

The restaurant should open in the next couple of weeks. They are hiring for all positions right now and are finishing all of the final details. Stone Fired Social will soon be hosting families, happy hours, team celebrations, parties and much more.
