Fort Mill is home to the Anne Springs Close Greenway, which is an extensive area of protected nature preserve that totals approximately 2,100 acres and includes lakes, forests, pastures and trails. The greenway is the perfect place for hiking, biking, kayaking, horseback riding and more.

Maintaining the greenway is no small feat, and a fundraising drive was initiated recently in an attempt to raise $211,000 annually to pay for maintenance of the land.

There has been a tremendous amount of corporate growth in and around Fort Mill, and with that growth comes new and more employees to the area. The greenway is capitalizing on that growth and aiming to better connect with local CEOs and business people that could help in fundraising efforts for the nature preserve.

The Anne Springs Close Greenway not only needs corporate donations, but also participation from employees who can volunteer or host corporate events at the greenway.

There have been a number of efforts to generate interest and create buzz around the greenway and all it has to offer, including a business breakfast, a social media-focused marketing campaign encouraging people to take selfies on the greenway, and a hiking event.

New infrastructure projects are happening in Lake Wylie

Many new developments are on the horizon for Lake Wylie, particularly infrastructure projects, which are great for the city, its residents, and the local economy. Most recently, a $1.75 million construction contract was awarded by York County Council for an intersection realignment at SC 557, Griggs Road and Bate Harvey Road, right beside Griggs Road Elementary School. The project should help with the traffic and safety of the area, and it is slated for completion by the end of 2017.

A lane-widening project is also underway at SC 274 and 279, and the $25.7 million project is expected to be completed in 2020. Another multi-lane widening project of SC 557 that only totals about $4.3 million will also be completed in the same year. As far as this year is concerned, residents can expect a shoulder-widening on Paraham Road, with completion anticipated for this fall.

These infrastructure projects are part of the Pennies program, which has been very successful overall but has faced cost estimate issues. Many projects have turned out to be more expensive than anticipated, and there are discussions on how to fix this. There is a new staff in place overseeing the program, which could assist in making better cost estimates, as well as utilities assessments.

Overall, there is plenty of positive change in the pipeline for the infrastructure of Lake Wylie, and the Pennies project has been widely successful in helping to implement this change. Big merger brings more jobs to Fort Mill

Development projects have been on the rise in Fort Mill and have recently included new residential housing projects as well as an influx of commercial spaces and storefronts and thus, a thriving local economy has resulted. Plus, as more businesses move in and expand, Fort Mill continues to see a rise in employment opportunities which further benefits the economy here, and a recent merger exemplifies this.

Fort Mill is the home of Mergent Inc.’s headquarters, a company that provides financial data and analysis to investors regarding both public and private companies. While it is not a very large company, it does have a one hundred-year history and a massive amount of data. These factors contributed to the recent sale of the company to the London Stock Exchange.

This sale is big news on a global scale, however it is also significant to the local market because it is expected to bring more jobs to Fort Mill. Mergent’s merger with the London Stock Exchange will help enable the small company to compete with its billion-dollar counterparts. Furthermore, it will allow Mergent to grow and broaden its “range of data services, research and analytics to meet the increasing demand of [its] clients.” Mergent currently has approximately 4,000 customers across the globe that include investment firms, brokerage houses and law firms.

Fort Mill is home to 120 of Mergent’s 300 employees worldwide and is looking forward to expanding employment here. The final deal is expected to close on January 31, 2017.
