Where To Go For Spooky Halloween Fun

Ghosts and Goblins, get ready, it’s that time of year again for some spooky fun! From Scarowinds to haunted car washes to haunted houses to creepy trails, we have all of the details so you can make the most of the season.

Scarowinds – select nights September – Halloween night – 7pm – midnight – Theme park becomes scream park with haunted attractions, shows, and characters throughout the Carowinds theme park in Rock Hill. Online price $39 per person, $72 at the gate.
Tunnel of Terror Haunted Car Wash – Pack your car full of family or friends for a scare and get your car washed too. At the AquaWave Express Car Wash in Belmont. Tickets are $22 per car, wash included. Thursdays – Sundays until Halloween, 7pm – midnight.
Frightmare! At Mr. Putty’s in Tega Cay – Haunted House, Haunted Mini-Golf, and scare zones await you at Mr. Putty’s. Fridays and Saturdays until Halloween, 7-11 pm. $15 general admission, $20 combo pass for golf and haunted house.
The 901 Nightmare – wander the woods through old barns, an abandoned insane asylum, and various outbuildings in a maze of terror. Open Friday – Sunday and the Thursday before Halloween, 7:30-10:30 pm. Admission is $20 for adults and $15 for children.

If scary isn’t your scene, try one of these pumpkin patches with activities for the kids:

Curtin Farms – this working farm in Clover offers non-spooky fun for school groups. They offer two hour tours with multiple education stations, pumpkin patch, hayrides and hay maze.
Hunter Farm – closed Mondays, pumpkin patch, wagon rides, and petting barn. Reservations are required for wagon rides. On Providence Road in Weddington.
Tega Cay Pumpkin Patch and Grace Pumpkin Patch in Tega Cay – just pumpkin patches, no tours or hayrides. Photo opportunities and pumpkins you can buy and bring home.

Where to Watch Fireworks

Independence Day is coming soon so it’s the perfect time to decide where you will watch fireworks. With a rumored shortage of fireworks, large displays may be all you can find this year so you want to get the best bang for your buck. Here are some of the best in the area, and pardon us for being biased, but the fireworks on Lake Wylie are probably the best.

Lake Wylie – grab a view of the water from near or on the Buster Boyd Bridge for the best views. Bonus, get there early and get a table at Papa Doc’s or Rey Azetca or other neighborhood spots with decks or patios. Extra bonus, on a boat in the water. The fireworks will start around 9:30 and are launched from Camp Thunderbird. This event is free, but donations are accepted.
Carowinds – July 3 & 4, catch fireworks and patriotic music at Carowinds as part of daily admission. Reservations are required online for entry and most days are sold out with limited tickets each day due to Covid protocols. Daily passes start at $42. Fireworks start at 8:45pm.
US National Whitewater Center – July 3 & 4th. This event features yoga, fireworks, live music and activities. Cost is $6 for parking then free. Event runs 9am to 9:30pm with fireworks closing out each night.
Red, White & Boom – July 3rd – This annual event in Rock Hill, SC is great for families with young children. There are inflatables, food trucks, and music provided by Groove Machine and Kids in America. Event runs 4pm – 10pm with fireworks starting at 9:30pm.
Gastonia’s Fourth of July Festival – 4 pm until 9:30 pm enjoy food trucks, live music, vendors, and of course fireworks. For the adults, there is also a beer garden.

New Watersports Business Coming to Lake Wylie

A new watersports business is coming on May first to Lake Wylie. The launch happens just as vaccination rates are on the rise and gathering rules are starting to relax. What more perfect way to celebrate than by getting in the water and enjoying yourself at Lake Wylie.

The new business is called Holley Watersports and is located at Papa Doc’s Shore Club right at the Buster Boyd Bridge access area. This area is typically known for motorized boat traffic, but now will have kayaks, paddleboards, and pedal boats available to rent from Holley Watersports.

Safety is key with Holley Watersports. They have all of the gear you need to be safe in the water. In addition, all participants, adults and children, will need to sign a waiver stating that they will follow safety rules.

There should be plenty of car parking as Papa Doc’s Shore Club has enough spaces for large gatherings like the 4th of July and boat parade events. This means that this is the perfect place to gather before you go out on the water, or for a celebratory meal or drinks after you get back from your lake adventure.

The business is similar to others in place on the Catawba River between Tega Cay and Rock Hill. These services have proved popular so it seems like it will be a great addition to this area. There are so many nearby neighborhoods that can benefit from the lake access in addition to corporate functions, parties, and much more.

Best Holiday Lights in 2020

Due to the ongoing pandemic, many people are starting to decorate for the holidays a little bit early. It has even been said that people who decorate for the holidays earlier are happier. In the spirit of celebration, here are some holiday light displays you can see, either from the comfort of your home, driving in your car, or walking around in person.

Of course, the most famous of all light shows in the area is Mcadenville. The whole town gets into the festive spirit and you can drive through in your car and see all of the lights. This event is free.
A hybrid event is being held at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. You can drive through the 3.75-mile course to see over 4 million lights. You can also get out of your car (with a mask and social distancing) and enjoy food and drink. Tickets are required and are charged per car.
Carowinds is once again hosting a holiday event called Taste of the Season. There will be food and drink throughout the park as well as live music and light displays. Reservations are required, and masks when not eating and drinking. Temperature checks will be required for entry.
Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens is hosting Holidays at the Garden. This walk through event will feature food and drink as you stroll through the gardens and view lights and cherry blossoms. Masks are required as are tickets.
The U.S. National Whitewater Center is once again hosting a ½ mile walking trail of lights. This event is free if you have a parking permit, otherwise it is $6/car. Masks are required.
Walmart is hosting a drone show for the holidays. You can see it in person at the location on Carowinds Boulevard, or watch on Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok on December 16th. The event is free, but tickets are required in person so you can maintain social distancing.
There is one completely online event, the Cabarrus Virtual Holiday Celebration. You can enjoy this from your own home, no mask required. You can see it on your computer, or it will be broadcast a few times during the season on Channel 22.

Happy 4th and Free Fishing Day

What better time to come enjoy any Lake in North Carolina than on Free Fishing Day. This day happens once per year and is open to anyone, regardless of age, even if you don’t have a fishing license in the state. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is stocking some of the waters so you have a better chance of catching a fish. To learn more about the event, click here.

The event runs from 12 am until 11:59 pm and is open to everyone even if you are not a resident of North Carolina. There are length and daily possession limits and restrictions on bait and tackle. This event occurs every July 4th, and promotes fishing as a sport. This year, with Covid-19 restrictions, this event is more appealing than ever as you can be socially distanced on the many miles of lakes in the area. Fishing can be done from a boat or from the shore and is great for anyone.

There are bound to be lines at the public boat launches so patience and a good attitude are key to enjoying this event. If you are tired of waiting in line for the public spaces, there are many other smaller lakes sites you can visit that you can look up at www.ncwildlife,org on the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission website.

Another option if you have the means is to purchase a waterfront home on a lake or purchase a property that has private lake access. This way you can enjoy the lake year round and can purchase a fishing license so you can enjoy fishing all year round.

Fall Festivals have Arrived

Labor Day has come and gone and this means that it is almost fall! This amazing time of year is perfect for picking apples, pumpkin patches, and festivals of all sorts. The cooler (hopefully) weather makes being outside with the community a great way to connect. Here are just a few of our favorite festivals close to Lake Wylie:

Grandiflora Glass – now through September 29th at Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. This is a botanical glass art exhibit within the gardens. Tickets are $14.95 for adults and $7.95 for children with children 2 and under free.
Mid Autumn Fest – September 14, 6-9 pm at Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. This is an Asian tradition of celebration beneath the harvest moon. Tickets are $14.95 for adults and $7.95 for children with children 2 and under free.
The Great Pumpkin Fest – September 14th – October 27th at Carowinds. Free with your $48 park admission, celebrate the season with a corn maze, hay bale maze, challenge course, crafts and more.
Flow Fest – September 21st and 22nd 7 am – 10 pm at the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Enjoy two days of yoga, mindfulness, and wellness. Cost is free to attend, workshops are an additional cost.
GO FEST – September 26th 6:30-9 pm in Downtown Gastonia. The streets will be closed for live music and local brews and food trucks.
Riverfest – September 28th 1-6 pm – Kevin Lofton Park in Belmont. This free festival will include log rolling and kayaking to highlight the river. Expect food trucks and vendor booths.
Fall Festival – October 5th 9 am to 6 pm, U. S. National Whitewater Center. Enjoy fall yoga, obstacle courses, apple cider and a build-your-own boat competition. Free to enjoy.
20th Anniversary Festival – October 5th 11 am until 2 pm at Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. Visit this family party with petting zoo, crafts and activities. Free to members, $8 adults, $4 kids 2-12, under 2 free.

More potential development for Lake Wylie, Fort Mill and more

Plenty of residential and commercial development is on the horizon in Lake Wylie, Fort Mill and all over York County. Many projects are still in the planning phases, but locals could expect some big changes around town.

Lake Wiley’s Mill Creek Commons could be the potential new site for a new apartment community right across from the Harpers Green subdivision. This will be a significant residential addition as Mill Creek Commons is already home to many commercial retailers, including Walmart, Lowe’s, McDonald’s, Bank of America, Wachovia, Walgreens and Zaxby’s.

Furthermore, the 13-acre Public Storage site at the corner of Bonum Road and SC 49 could be home to even more new mini warehouses.

Fort Mill may be getting a new vet clinic at the North Carolina state line just off of Hamilton Place. Also in Fort Mill, a 5,000 square-foot space at 3004 US could undergoing a change from retail space to restaurant space.

There are also talks of building a 157-lot subdivision in the Rock Hill area just east of Hands Mill Highway. County planners are also discussing expanding another home subdivision at Shadow Lane and Brush Creek Road, and expanding a single-family subdivision west of SC 901.

Philly food comes to Lake Wylie

New dining options seem to be popping up all over town in Lake Wylie, and it is always exciting when there is a new type of food for residents to enjoy that wasn’t previously easy to find.

A new restaurant just opened that will make Philadelphia transplants and cheesesteak lovers alike very happy. Now, Lee’s Hoagie House has roots in Lake Wylie, South Carolina.

It is the first franchise for the company to open outside of the Philadelphia area, and with Lake Wylie not having a cheesesteak and hoagie dining option, the company thought the town seemed like a great fit to move to. Furthermore, Lee’s plans to open a location in Asheville in the next three months, with a possible Charlotte location on the horizon as well. The Charlotte region is known to be home to many transplants from the northeast region, so the move for the company to this area of the country seemed only natural.

The Lake Wylie location of Lee’s Hoagie House will be located at 312 Bulkhead Way, Suite 101, in Lake Wylie Commons.
