Major development is happening in York County

Screen Shot 2016-08-28 at 9.28.56 PM

Exciting things are happening in and around the Lake Wylie area, and if you have been thinking about moving to the area, now may be the best time yet.

Development plans are in full swing in York County, with major residential projects on the horizon in Lake Wylie, and plenty of commercial construction happening in Fort Mill, as well. There are currently several hundred acres of land up for review for new construction plans across the region.

The southwest corner of US 21 and Gold Hill Road occupying almost 25 acres is tentatively planned for four commercial 30,000-square-foot buildings, plus another 20,000 square-foot building, as well as plenty of parking.  The property is currently zoned for residential use but rezoning efforts are in the works. This will be big!

There is also a residential subdivision in the planning stages in Lake Wylie on a piece of property owned by Crescent Communities, a very prominent developer. The proposed site is located at SC 49 and Daimler Boulevard, and plans include the development of single family homes.

There are also plans for an apartment complex at the corner of SC 49 and Senator Road, just east on Mill Pond Road. Furthermore, another car wash could also be moving into the Lake Wylie area on a 15 acre lot on SC 49.

So much growth and development throughout York County shows signs of a strong economy here as well as it being a desirable place to live. As the community grows and more residential options become available, the business community will also continue to thrive. Fort Mill is getting a new high school!

Screen Shot 2016-08-27 at 8.02.32 PMThere is exciting news for the town of Fort Mill and the families who live there. Fort Mill is getting a new high school! Drawings have recently been submitted for review by the Fort Mill School District which is awaiting approval for the site layout.

The new school will be located on the southwest corner of Fort Mill Parkway and Whites Road, and there will be two entrances off of the bypass to the main building. Plans for the school will include a football stadium, a soccer and lacrosse field, a track space and three practice fields. There will also be a band practice field, as well as baseball, softball and tennis facilities.

Preliminary drawings were released in May and updates came last week. Now, the school district is in a position to proceed with the clearing and grading of the site, so the most updated drawings were voted on and need final approval so that the district can move forward with the site plan, including the access points, driveway locations, building and field locations, and general site layout, in order for permits to be issued.

Plenty of details still have to be finalized, such as the school name, school mascot and color scheme. However, since the high school is not slated to open until 2019, there is plenty of time to iron out the details. From an aesthetic perspective, the current plan depicts a school with a brick veneer and stone accents, as well as fiber cement wall panels.

Tega Cay’s sports and entertainment game is about to get a whole lot better

Screen Shot 2016-08-21 at 4.46.49 PMThe sports, activity and entertainment landscape of Tega Cay is about to be reshaped with a whole new concept potentially changing the game.

Tons of development is on the horizon for the Tega Cay community located just south of Charlotte. The city has recently granted approval to move forward with plans on a sports and entertainment proposal drafted by Game On Development.

The Moorsetown, North Carolina-based entertainment development company is aiming to create a community gathering spot while reshaping the sports landscape of the Tega Cay community. The multi-faceted project involves taking over more than 78 acres and would include a two-level sports facility, a 14-screen movie theater complex, a 150-room boutique hotel, a four-level parking garage, a park, both medical and professional office space, retail storefronts and residential space, as well.

The sports facility alone would have eight basketball courts, four multipurpose fields, indoor as well as outdoor tennis courts, an olympic-size resort-style pool, a bowling alley, and a 35,000 square-foot fitness center to boot. Not only would the sports complex be for local residents to use and enjoy, but there have also been talks about the facility functioning as a world-class sports training site.

The current plans call for residential space to be located above commercial space, and there is also potential for an assisted living facility as part of the plan. The first phase of the entire project would include the construction of the indoor sports facility and of the hotel.

This is a very exciting concept for the city and would be a great boost for the local economy. For more details on the plan, check out the full article at

Affordable housing development coming to Belmont

Screen Shot 2016-08-07 at 9.22.23 PMBelmont is about to be home to a beautiful new affordable multi-family development. Laurel Street residential, in partnership with St. Paul Baptist Church, just broke ground on the 112-unit community that will be located at 1322 Allen Street. The community will include a 60-unit senior housing building, 29 townhouse-style units and a 23-unit garden style apartment building.

This rental community is designated for seniors as well as families that earn 60% or less of the region’s median income. The project is slated to be finished in late 2017. Creating stable housing options for a historic community like Belmont is crucial to the successful future of the town.  Affordable housing for current residents with fixed or limited incomes provides them with the opportunity to stay in the community in which they live.

Community amenities will include outdoor seating areas, a playground, a computer center, a community room, a fitness center and also a covered picnic area.

St. Paul Baptist Church, which plays a major role in the development of this project, aims to expand affordable housing in the Belmont neighborhood. While it is primarily their vision behind the project, the city of Charlotte also plays an instrumental role in helping the plan come to fruition. The new development will also be closely located near a future light rail stop, making accessible transportation options available for people of all incomes.

Belmont’s Caravan Coffee is a local favorite

Screen Shot 2016-08-07 at 9.16.00 PMBelmont continues to get an influx of new restaurant openings. However, let’s not forget about the staples here. Caravan Coffee and Dessert Bar has been a part of the Belmont community for almost 13 years and is a go-to place for a cup of coffee, delicious dessert, or even a smoothie.

The space includes a great outdoor patio with a view of Stowe Park, where you can relax while Vince Hill, the owner, runs the coffee shop and his wife, Brenda, the pastry chef behind the deliciousness, whips up desserts.

Caravan Coffee and Dessert Bar offers a hometown feel and a local vibe. The shop offers incredible specialty house recipe coffees, including Banana Nut Crunch, Caramel Apple, Peppermint Patty and the Coffee Toffee Freeze. You also can’t miss the lemon pound cake, chocolate layer cake or carrot cake. And if a slice is not enough, you can purchase a whole cake next door at Brenda’s Cake Gallery.

Aside from the coffee shop, the owners are also known for bringing fun and free community activities to Belmont, including the popular Friday Night Live concerts and the Downtown Christmas Village. You can check out the Friday Night Live concerts every other Friday evening May through August on the Main Street. The Downtown Christmas Village includes horse drawn carriage rides, carolers and food vendors also on the Main Street and originated right outside of the coffee shop, where it was appropriately named “Christmas at Caravan.”

Caravan owners also helped co-create the summer Sizzlin’ Cook-Off, where local grillers are judged on their recipes for chicken, ribs and pulled pork, and the festival will take place this year on September 9th and 10th.
